In order to lessen the damages that can happen during a tropical depression/storm/typhoon there are precautionary measures that people should take before, during and after a typhoon.

Before a Typhoon
  • Ensure that all windows, doors, chimneys and the roof are free from any leaks and repair any damage before the start of the rainy season.
  • Reinforce any weakened walls or posts supporting the house.
  • Remove any over hanging tree branches that could cause damage to your house.
  • Ensure all electrical wiring is working safely and correctly.
  • Stock up on an adequate supply of non-perishable goods such as tinned food - ideally enough to last a few days at least.
  • It is vital to ensure you have an adequate supply of drinking water as well as water for other purposes such as washing.
  • Be prepared for power outages with a supply of flashlights, batteries, candles and matches.
  • It is important to educate children regarding standard typhoon safety protocol.
  • Have a bag of clothes ready to go in case of sudden evacuation.
  • Ensure all water drainage systems in and around the house are clear.
During a Typhoon
  • Always keep up to date with the latest news information regarding the typhoon.
  • Do not leave your house unless you are sure that it is safe.
  • If outside during a typhoon, attempt to avoid walking near electrical posts and wiring.
  • Avoid low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
  • Be fully prepared for a quick evacuation in case it is required.
  • As soon as you feel it is unsafe in your house you should evacuate.
  • Do not leave an evacuation center unless you are advised to do so.
  • Ensure you have an adequate  supply of bottled drinks and boil water if drinking to ensure it is sterilized.
  • Such is the danger created by a typhoon, it is best to avoid leaving the house unless it is of vital importance.
After a Typhoon
  • Inspect all electrical wiring and water pipes and if you discover any damage contact a professional for repairs.
  • Wear shoes or slippers to protect your feet from any sharp objects that may have fallen during the typhoon.
  • Any fallen electrical wires should be avoided at all costs.
  • Repair any damage that your house has sustained.
  • Drinking water should be boiled before consuming to ensure it is safe to drink.
  • Flood water should be avoided if possible as it can often carry harmful water born diseases.
  • Finally, you should clear up all the mess caused by the typhoon so that your house can once again return to normal.

These precautionary measures could save lives and lessen damages to properties when they are seriously complied with.
